Troubleshooting
How does
the Detto Migration Advisor work?
The Advisor is an online tool that scans
your computer and presents you with information that can
help you make a decision on how to migrate information
to your new PC.
In order to gather information about your PC, the Advisor
downloads a small utility that performs a scan. When you
choose to start the Advisor you will see a message notifying
you that you are downloading the utility and that it has
been signed by Detto Technologies (see Figure 1). The
utility will then start the scan and when finished will
a summary of your results and make a recommendation on
the best migration method for your configuration. You
will have access to a full report containing all of your
results on the same page. You can print this report if
you wish to have for future reference.

What are the
system requirements?
In order to run the Detto Migration
Advisor your computer must meet the following requirements:
- Microsoft®
Windows® 98, 98SE, 2000 or XP
- Microsoft
Internet Explorer v5.0 or higher
- Microsoft
XML 4.0 installed
- Disable pop-up
blocker tool
- Logged in
user account must have Local Administrative rights
If your computer does not meet any of
these requirements, the Advisor will notify you of which
requirements are not met and provide you with further
instructions.

How long
does the process take?
In The average time to complete process
is between 3-7 minutes. The total time varies on a couple
of different factors as described below.
There are 3 steps in the Detto Migration
Advisor process that may take a couple of minutes. The
exact time for each step depends on characteristics of
the computer you are running the Advisor on. Below are
some estimates, to give you a rough idea of what to expect.
1. The time to download the Migration
Advisor scanning component (514 KB), depends on the type
of connection you have to the Internet:
- Dial-up 28.8 = 2:26 min.
- Dial-up 56.6 = 1:15 min.
- Cable/DSL = 30 sec.
- LAN = 4 sec.
2. The actual scan of your computer
depends somewhat on your processor and how much data is
on your computer, but it typically takes between 1-2
minutes.
3. IF you do not have XML 4.0
already installed on you computer you will need to download
and install it (641 KB), the time this takes depends on
the type of connection you have to the Internet:
- Dial-up 28.8 = 3:20 min.
- Dial-up 56.6 = 1:33 min.
- Cable/DSL = 38 sec.
- LAN = 5 sec.

How big are
the components that get downloaded to my computer?
- The Detto Migration Advisor component
that gets downloaded is 514 KB.
- If you require the Microsoft
XML 4.0 component as well, that cab file by itself is
641 KB.

How do
I get my results?
A summary of your results are
displayed at Step #3: My Results. Also on that page, there
is a "View/Print Report" button in the table
at the top of the page. Clicking on this button will display
your personalized report in a new window. This report
contains all of your detailed results as well as a collection
of other information that you may find useful when moving
to a new computer. You may click the Print button on the
page to print this report for future reference.
NOTE: You can always go back to the Results page
to view or print your report even after you've advanced
to Step #4, however you may have to re-run the scan. Running
the scan additional times is always faster than the initial
scan.

Will anyone
else see my results? Will they be transmitted across the
Internet?
No. None of your personal data is transmitted
at any point during the Detto Migration Advisor process.
All of the data that is found during the scan is used
to present to you on-screen for your knowledge. The results
are stored in a file that always remains on your local
computer and is deleted when the process is complete.

I'm getting
an error message that says the XML component or the Advisor
component failed to download?
You may be seeing either of the messages
shown in Figures 2 & 3 below

Figure 2. Microsoft XML 4.0 Download Failed

Figure 3. Advisor Scanner Download Failed
There are two common causes for this
situation.
- The user account that you are currently
logged into does not have local administrator privileges.
In order to download and install both the XML and the
Advisor component the user must local administrative
privileges. See your operating system manual for instructions
on how to set local administrative privileges.
- Internet Explorer security
settings are set to prevent the download and/or running
of ActiveX components. An ActiveX component is the mechanism
that allows the Migration Advisor to communicate with
your computer. If your security settings prevent this,
the Advisor will not function correctly.

The scan appears
to be stuck, what should I do?
The download and scan combined typically
takes 3-5 minutes depending on they type of Internet connection
you have and the processing speed of your computer. If
it has been significantly longer than 5 minutes and you
still see the repeating scanning animation but have not
received any error message, the scan may have been stopped
by another process. Typically the cause of this is that
you have a pop-up blocker tool running that has blocked
the scanning window. To fix the problem, use your browser's
back button to return to the start page, disable your
pop-up blocker (or allow the pop-up when prompted) and
click start again.

I see a dialog
indicating that the download files are not properly signed
should
I be worried?
No. All of the Migration Advisor files
are signed as safe for scripting by Detto Technologies.
If you are running an older Windows operating system you
may see the screen shown in Figure 4, indicating that
the certificate has expired. An outdated Verisign Root
Certificate on your computer causes this problem. The
update is available from Microsoft as a Windows update.
If you install the update, the certificate will show as
fully valid. This is not necessary, since it does not
change anything about the Advisor files, it simply allows
your computer to correctly identify the Verisign certificate
that was used to sign them.
