JANUARY 2005 TIP

Cleaning passwords from your PC

If you've just bought a new PC, the chances are that you're going to give your old PC away. Perhaps you're giving it to a family member or a local charity, but it may be more than just your PC you're giving away. It might be your usernames, passwords, social security number, or even credit card numbers.

If you have entered these numbers for any online purchase, the information is more than likely to be still on your old PC. And as for those passwords that you entered, but are displayed as asterisks, or dots? They're on your PC also, and easily accessible for anyone who knows what they are doing.

The best way to protect yourself is to purchase a disk cleaning product to do the job, like SecureClean® from White Canyon (www.whitecanyon.com). You'll get a shock as it displays all that so called "hidden" information, but you'll be glad that you are the one to find and then delete it, before someone else discovers it!
