Choosing a Migration Product

There are several migration products on the market, and it's important to know what questions to ask before buying one. Click for a table of products.

Will everything work when I migrate to my new computer?

The migration of data files is handled well by all migration products. However, some handle moving your settings better than others. You may not think much about settings, but in actual fact, you've probably spent time setting up your background, shortcuts, custom toolbars, and it would be a waste if you had to recreate them all over again.

Look for a product that has extensive movement of settings, and save yourself a lot of extra time and effort.

Do I get control over what is moved?

This is important because you can end up with a lot of junk on your new PC if you're not careful about what you select to move. Be aware of applications that let you "just move everything" otherwise you will get all the junk from your old PC moved to your new computer.

Should I use a migration product to move applications?

Problems can and do arise when applications are moved by some migration products. There are applications that work under older version of Windows but do not work under Windows 2000 or Windows XP, unless you install them directly on the new PC.

To be safe, install the applications yourself on the new PC before you do the migration. It will save you a lot of unnecessary time and trouble. Migration of applications to newer systems may also violate some software license agreements from previous PC Manufacturers that only license preloaded software to a specific device and not to a user.

Some applications that are self-contained in a single folder can easily be moved. Applications like WinZip move easily since all the necessary configuration and executables are all in one folder. Move the folder and you will have moved the application.

What transport options are available for my systems? Are there particular requirements that I should be aware of?

Depending on the hardware and operating system of both your old and new computers, you may or may not be able to use all of the transport options available with different products. It is a good idea to do a little investigation into what the requirements are and whether or not your computers can support them.

Typically the most important things to know about both your old and new systems before making your decision on which transport, cable or product to use are what operating system they are running and what types of ports they have.

Can I use this product for more than just migration?

Unfortunately, many migration products are of no use to you once you have done your migration. Some products offer more than just migration, and include the ability to let you transfer files back and forth between the PCs at anytime.
