After you've migrated to your new computer
and scrubbed your old PC, you may decide it's time to throw
the old clunker out. Here are a couple of options to consider:
Throw it on the scrap heap: One of
the unfortunate things about PCs is that they are not biodegradable,
so throwing them in the trash does not help Mother Earth.
Visit an organization like the Electronic Equipment Recyclers
(www.nsc.org/ehc/epr2/recycler.HTM)
to find a site near you where you can dispose of your old
PC.
Donate it to a favorite charity:
The nice thing about this is that you may be able to claim
your donation as a tax write-off if you itemize your deductions.
For individuals, the write-off is at Fair Market Value (FMV),
and you can estimate the FMV of your computer by visiting
Orion Blue Books (http://www.usedprice.com/estimator/estimator_form.asp).
Alternatively, for businesses, the TaxPayer Relief Act of
1997 enables companies that donate computers under 2 years
old to schools, to qualify for a charitable deduction benefit.
Sell it: Lookup your Yellow Pages
and find a PC recycling store. Often times they will give
you a few bucks for your PC. Alternatively, consider using
eBay to resell it. There are hundreds of old PCs sold on eBay,
and it can be a great way to offset the cost of the new computer.
Recycle it through the computer's manufacturer:
If your computer's manufacturer is listed below, click the
name to go to their web link for more information on their
recycling programs.
