Erasing Data from a PC

In today’s newspapers, there are many articles about how people have been able to retrieve information like credit card numbers, financial data, and social security numbers from old computers that have been discarded by their owners. Fortunately there’s some really good software that will “scrub” the data for you to give you piece of mind before you get rid of your PC, and in a moment we’ll give you our recommendations.

How scrubbing software works
Whenever you delete a file in Windows, it is not erased from your hard drive. Although it’s still physically there, Windows no longer recognizes it and that’s why you can’t see it. The bad news is that it’s fairly easy for someone to find that file using restoration software that is freely available today.

The good news is that there is software on the market that does a very good job of scrubbing your data. In fact, the Department of Defense has established specific levels of “scrubbing” which virtually eliminate the possibility of data recovery, and many of these products can achieve these levels.

Detto announces SecureClean, which cleans personal data and Internet tracks from your PC.

Detto also recommends East-Tec's Disk Sanitizer (www.east-tec.com) and Vcomm's Disk(www.v-com.com), as two of the best products in their class.
