Unless you know the ins-and-outs of computers,
software and transfer methods, migrating by yourself can be
a daunting task. It will take a lot of time and effort, but
if you're ready to take the challenge, here's what's involved:
The basic approach is as follows:
- Decide
how you will transfer your data. You can use floppies, CDs/DVDs,
or a network.
- Find
the files and folders that you want to move.
-
Export your data and settings from your applications (specific
applications embed settings and can only be extracted by
exporting them).
- Move
the data to your choice of transfer medium.
- If
you are using floppies or CDs, insert them into the new
computer
- Click
for a step-by-step process.
Sounds pretty straightforward? Well here's
what takes the time.
- Unlike
migration software which does it for you in seconds, you
will have to find all the information to be moved by yourself.
Do this by using Windows Explorer and searching for the
files and folders you want to move.
- Warning:
you may need lot of CDs, and an even larger number of floppies.
- Expect
to spend a lot of time finding the information, and copying
them to floppies or CDs
- It's
very hard to be aware of everything that needs to be moved.
There's a good chance all your files are in the My Documents
folders, but it's worth spending time before you start making
a list of all the applications you use, so you know what
files to look for. Don't be surprised or disappointed if
you don't get everything the first time.
- Be
prepared to spend time setting up everything on your new
PC, including your Internet connection and email.
- Doing
your migration manually is cheaper than buying a migration
product, but how valuable is your time? If you are on the
fence, ask someone who has done this before!
