If
you’re reading this magazine, chances
are you’re a PC user who is better
acquainted with Windows than Mac OS. But
you might also have a Mac user living
in the house or a daughter who bought
an iMac to take to college. If that’s
the case, you might be interested in Detto
Technologies’ Move2Mac, a program
that lets you quickly move files and settings
from a PC to a Mac.
All you need is a PC with a USB (Universal
Serial Bus) port and a Mac computer with
a USB port. The system requirements aren’t
very stringent as far as the PC goes;
whether you have an old beige PC or a
sleek new one, you can use Move2Mac as
long as the PC is running Windows 95/98/98SE/2000/Me/XP,
has 32MB of RAM, and has at least 30MB
of free hard drive space. As for the Mac,
the system requirements are steeper: You
must have a Mac with the current OS (operating
system), Mac OS X 10.2 (also called Jaguar).
We
used Move2Mac to transfer files and settings
from an older Win98 PC to a Power Mac
running the latest Mac OS. The printed
and on-screen instructions were easy to
follow, although there was one discrepancy.
When the instructions tell you to locate
the program file on CD, you have to dig
a little deeper than indicated; you can
find the right program file in the CD’s
PC Install Files or Mac Install Files
folders, depending on what computer you’re
using at the time. After that, the instructions
were clear and led us
quickly through the steps for selecting
the files and settings we wanted to transfer.
We
were extremely impressed with how fast
Move2Mac works. In our tests, it took
3:11 (minutes:seconds) to transfer 88MB
worth of data (that’s 1,081 files
in all) from PC to Mac. When the transfer
was finished, the program placed a Move2Mac
Migration Report Alias text file on the
Mac desktop. This listed all of our selected
settings and files, and every file that
was moved. A USB cable is included. If
a Mac has invaded your house, Move2Mac
is a great icebreaker for your PC.
