Detto Technologies' New Migration Learning Center Helps Consumers Learn Ins-and-Outs of Moving to a New Computer

Knowledge/Content comes from years of selling through leading Computer manufacturers including HP, Dell, Gateway, Apple and IBM

Bellevue, WA - June 23rd, 2003 - Detto Technologies, the premier provider of migration technology for consumers, and well-known for its award-winning PC-to-PC and PC-to-Mac migration products, today unveiled the Migration Learning Center-the resource to help consumers overcome the barrier to moving to a new computer. The Migration Learning Center can be found at www.detto.com/learningcenter/.

"We recognize that users need education on migration issues to overcome the hurdles to moving to a new computer," said Larry Mana'o, CEO of Detto Technologies. "As the leading consumer migration vendor for PC users, having helped hundreds of thousands of customers move to their new computers, Detto has put together the first learning site dedicated to helping consumers migrate."

"We see lack of migration knowledge as a barrier to computer buying," said Tom Anderson, VP of worldwide marketing, HP's Consumer PC Global Business Unit. "Detto Technologies' Migration Learning Center will help users understand what is involved, and give them the confidence they need to make a PC upgrade decision."

Most PC Manufacturers cite migration as one of the top three reasons preventing consumers from moving to a new computer. Consumers need to know

a.) that there are solutions to migration

b.) what can be migrated

c.) how to do it (even manually), and

d.) what to do with their old PCs, afterwards, e.g. scrubbing the data and disposing of the PC.

The Migration Learning Center was designed to address these concerns.

Highlights of the Migration Learning Center include:

  • Understanding what can be migrated: Most people underestimate what can be migrated. Detto helps users understand the different files, settings, e-mail preferences and applications that can be migrated.

  • Choosing the right migration software: Detto helps answer the hard questions about migration including: Will everything work when I migrate to my computer? Do I get control over what is moved? Should I use a migration product to move applications? Can I use this product for more than just migration?
  • The pros and cons of migrating manually: Detto breaks down the manual migration process providing a benchmark for degree of difficulty of migrating different settings, e-mail, browsers, and applications. They also provide a step-by-step chart for manual migration and provide a comparison against migration software.
  • Moving to a Mac and the Switch chart: Move2Mac™ is the first, and only, migration product on the market today that allows users to "switch" to a Mac. This section breaks down the switching process, helping consumers know what programs and files they can use when they switch from a PC to the Mac. Detto also provides a chart to help consumers find Mac programs that are equivalent to PC programs, where there is no Mac version of that PC program.
  • How to erase data from a PC: Credit card information, financial data, and social security numbers can be easily accessed on an old PC. Detto has created recommendations on how a user can "scrub" their old PC to erase vital data that they'd rather not be seen by others.
  • How to dispose of an old PC: The U.S. EPA estimates that computers and other electronic equipment account for about 220 million tons of waste per year in the United States, and that 75 percent of obsolete electronics are still gathering dust in storerooms. With that in mind, Detto has created a list of options to consider after migrating to a new computer and having scrubbed the old PC. One option is to utilize the disposal programs provided by Gateway, Dell and HP.

The Migration Learning Site also has other features such as migration tips of the month with topics such as "How to avoid moving unwanted Internet files or e-mails to your new computer." It also answers many frequently asked migration questions including "Do migration products transfer software programs?" What happens if I have a newer version of software is on my new computer", "What if I forgot to move a few files and want to do so at a later date?" "Can I perform a migration more than once?"
